The governance framework at The University of Manchester is headed by three key people: the Chancellor, the Chair of the Board of Governors and the Pro-Chancellor.

  The Chancellor (Nazir Afzal OBE) is the ceremonial head of the University and chairs the General Assembly.

  The Chair of the Board of Governors, Edward Astle, (who also holds the title of Pro-Chancellor), plays an important role in the governance of the University while working independently of its regular executive management.
